Prophys are regular maintenance of a healthy mouth that has normal build up of bacteria that calcifies on a patients teeth. Patients often refer to this as “tartar” (the build up of deposits of bacteria and calcium or other minerals) Dentists often refer to it(the build up of deposits of bacteria and minerals) as plaque and calculus. This prophy is designed to maintain the health of the periodontium (the bone, the gingival tissue (gum tissue), mucosal tissue and the teeth) These appointments are normally between two to 4 visits per year.

The frequency of the 2 to 4 visits often depends on a multitude of factors such as age, diabetes, immune system of a particular patient, the prevalence of certain bacteria that can cause tooth decay or periodontal disease, medications that may be drying the patients mouth, and more.
